the art of choosing our battles

i know this is a little out of date but i just wanted to share my thoughts on the recent fight of pacquiao. i wrote this monday night after that horrifying sunday but before publishing it in my blog, i have to deliver this first in one of our toastmaster's sesh.

The Art of Choosing Our Battles

Jon Saraceno in his headline for the USA Today wrote: “Covered in a mask of blood, the 39 year old fighter blasted Pacquiao with a huge right hand with one second remaining in the sixth round to score a decisive knockout, the first time he defeated his Filipino adversary in four attempts.”  Last Sunday, Dec 9, Marquez put a definitive conclusion to a rivalry that spanned for a total of 42 rounds in over 7 years. A jaw-dropping, unbelievable and surprisingly entertaining match for boxing and non-boxing fans alike.

Good evening toastmasters and guests.

I was not a huge boxing fan. I prefer basketball and football because these are the 2 sports I can play. But when Manny Pacquiao became a national icon, I started to consider watching his fight and eventually got interested in other boxers and the sport itself. But let’s face it, here in the Philippines majority of the people don’t really care about other boxers or other boxing fights for that matter. The only fight that we care about so much so as posting it in our facebook status or hashtagging it in our twitter timeline is that of the “Pambansang  Kamao” or Pacquiao’s. After all, he was and he is phenomenal.

To those of you who are very much into social networking, you may have read, commented and even liked statuses that talked about Pacquiao’s fall over Marquez. There was the issue of him losing because he changed religion and did not make the sign of the cross. There was that status about the RH bill connected of his defeat, which I found very funny by the way. There were also true blue fans of Pacman who voiced their admiration and approval of him as one of the famers for boxing even after the fall. Interestingly, in my own facebook timeline and twitter majority of the posts were expressing their desire for Pacman to retire and just give up those boxing gloves. They question why did he even bother fighting against Marquez when he already got him 2 times with the previous fights? Fair notion, isn’t it?. But the real question is, can he really just retire immediately as much as he wants to? As much as his family wants to? Or as much as his fans want to? And can he really choose his fights or who to fight?

We need to make one thing clear. First, we have to know that 95% of the time, boxers cannot choose who they want to contend. Before they match up with the famous, they got to be famous themselves and how do they do that? Their promoter will do everything in their power to tie up with media, get them famous by spending thousands of pesos or dollars for that matter and spend a lot of time and effort to get the boxer in the A-list.

So, case and point #1: Before Pacquiao became the icon that he is, thousands of money was spent to build him. Case and point #2: He may have already doubled or tripled the money that was spent to build him but he can only stop when his promoting company sees it as appropriate for him and his career and for their pockets too. To simply put it, Pacquiao no matter how beat-up and humiliated he already is cannot choose to end all this boxing frenzy as easy as saying, “I quit”.

But you know what battle or what fight he can choose? The battle of humility, the fight to maintain sportsmanship by honestly declaring his mistake: “I got careless, I got hit by a punch I didn’t see”

Unlike Pacquiao, we as human beings in our struggle to survive have the option to choose which battles to fight. It may be choosing to do right in a workplace, which consents to an immoral act. It may be simply keeping silent at a pissed off partner and waiting for the anger to cool down. The moment we keep our rationales above our emotions, our opponent may think that they are dominant and we lay inferior over their strong outbursts. But truth of the matter is, choosing wisely which battles to win and fight is already winning in itself. So fellow toastmasters, choose your battles wisely today.

Good evening!

and to top that, i will share some of the photos i took at the waterfront hotel and casino where we watched the fight (:

what's in my bag?

hello wednesday!

after 2 days full shift at starbucks, i'm finally off! i'm happy cos i can now immerse myself in the cyber world. i'm not yet (take note of yet :p) an internet addict but i'm part of the general population who frequents social networking sites, blogs, and the likes. most celebrity bloggers have already their version of what's in their bag so might as well have mine (:

no, i'm not trying to be a celebrity here, okay? but one time, after about an hour of walking around the mall with jp i complained of pain in my right shoulder. jp then offered to (hand) carry my bag since it was causing the pain obviously. he suddenly blurted, "my god, this is so heavy lovelove! what the heck are you carrying?" haha after that, i realize that i need to smartly choose what stuff to bring moving forward to make sure that carrying my bag wouldn't be so much of a hassle.

these are my essentials (not yours, so don't judge :p)

that's my rainbow bag today!
my onto headset. i don't have one of those pricey hard case so i just put it in a ziplock!
brilliant huh?

this white coach cellphone pouch is from tita ella (jp's mom) yeah, i always always
 bring  phone chargers!

make-up pouch: inside is ciracle bb cream, yves rocher moisturizer, compact face
powder, eyeliner, brush, chapstick, blush on, mascara, and lash curler
(some stuff i said is not seen hehe)

wallet, keys, and the green apron book of starbucks which contain coffee recipes
 i need to study

gucci and calvin klein samplers from jp's mom! they smell soooo good
and very handy too!

this is where i put 'em together with my hair comb and ties and alcohol (:

there goes my bag! yesterday, jp slipped in some m&m's and snickers for my baon daw (: yeah, he is sweet like that!

that's me today! i'm in a hurry cos jp has been waiting for 10 mins already when i took this ((:
it took me a while to really think the stuff to carry and the stuff to leave behind. for now though, i'm happy to say that my bag is way way lighter than it used to! what about you? what's in your bag?

day 2- a photo of yourself a year ago

the first quarter of last year was my last 3 months in college. i choose this photo below because i remembered this was one of the rarest time where i get to be a lil vain and take a phone photo of me. my last year was very busy since i was the graduating class president and there were a lot of things to accomplish for the graduation program. on top of that, i was a returnee so i have to accomplish more skills and cases before i was allowed to graduate. augh! i miss the feeling of being stressed with school stuff. at that time, accomplishing my responsibilities for the graduating class was the most important thing in my life (:

this was in my dorm bed on a friday afternoon

10 day photo challenge

today is my last day of rest so i gotta make the most of it. ever since i stopped working in a call center, i usually sleep early and wake up early too but for the last 2 weeks i was on night duty so my body clock tend to adopt immediately to it's former state. now, since i'm back on the morning shift, it's kinda hard for me to sleep early plus i miss blogging so i'm back to abusing my body (for the moment)

as i was visiting some blogs, i came across this photo challenge which i wanted to complete just to fill up my insomniac mood (if there's ever a term like that hahaha) here goes:

Day 1- Facebook Profile Photo + 5 facts on photo

1. the two-piece i'm wearing is roxy which i bought from a very good friend, sherah!

2. this was in boracay more than a year ago

3. i was with college classmates since this boracay week was a celebration of our college graduation

4. i had to drink a little rhum to be confident strutting my stuff in this beautiful island (hahaha)

5. i was very sick when i got to cebu after this trip because of non-sleep

random date night

after a very long time, me and jp has not been able to go out at night like most normal couples would do because of crazy work scheds. this week though, he was able to file a 2-day leave which is on my day off from the hospital so we were able to go out. so i put off my nursing duties for a night and head out to eat. yeyyy!

we were planning to grab some pizzas but when we got to ayala, jp remembered one of our first dinner out together in bigbys. he suddenly wanted to go back there, so bigbys we went (:

anybody who frequents bigbys can attest that their quesadilla is the best!

this is my favorite spot in ayala terraces! thanks jp for this photo, X

bigbys is a lil bit pricey but trust me, order the quesadilla and the bill you see won't matter (: and date nights are not an everyday thing so splurging a bit is not that bad hahaha i hope you guys have great date nights with the person you care about so much like i do (:

back to square one

so yes, i haven't been writing lately. most of the reason always go back to being always knock-out tired from my (voluntary) work at the hospital. lately, a lot of volunteers like me are cutting off on hours of work because of too much workload and maybe personal reasons i honestly don't know. so we are left almost always under staff. and part of the reason is, i am always procrastinating to write only because i think that you know, this blog doesn't go anywhere anyway so yeah, maybe it can still wait for another day.

but i got to admit that i miss the ticking sound the keyboard makes when i try to type as fast as possible so as not to lose my train of thought. i also missed my finger reflex trying to reach on those letters for the words to completely make sense. in short, i'm a nerd in this lil kinda way so i just have to pen (or type) these thoughts.

this weekend, i went to jp's house and i caught tita ella (jp's mom) unboxing a balikbayan box full of her christmas decors. it's a day after all saint's and i was surprised to realize how the holiday season is coming up sooo fast. less than 60 days and it's falalala la lala la la! 💃💃💃 wow! we are almost to the end of 2012 and it's making me a lil bit emotional. for the record, a lot has happened this year and i don't want to make the end of it come so fast. i still wanted to accomplish more. on the other hand, i am also excited for a brand new year, whatever it has to offer.

so just before the year ends, i am looking forward to 2 things.

first, this december me and jp will have our 1st anniversary of being together. it won't be much cos he has work and i probably has to. but it's a big step for me cos before him my longest relationship was just 9 months max. so i know you don't care, but just let me. hahaha and by the way, we don't do monthsaries altogether so we really don't how to do this thing. but looking at how friends actually do their monthsaries and all, i think celebrations are best spent just being together and eating out together (which by the way we do best), so we'll get through it for sure. haha

second, and probably as important. my sister honey is expecting. hopefully before the the year ends or if the baby come's out 2 weeks later than expected, by new year i will be an aunt! yeyyy! this one also got me excited because i have always been lucky to be loved by my aunts. my aunties are the best in the world. and since it's my turn to be one, i want to do it right.

i know you guys are also looking forward to a brand new year but just as how important it is to start the year right, ending this year right is as valuable. i hope that we all are giddy and wishful for happy things   for the coming holidays.
